Every moment of your life is a work of art you brought into being. Its shape and form and color and feeling-tone are all of your doing. If you believe some external force has defined the truth of who you are in any way, you are mistaken.

Yet, you say, look at what I have become because of what he, she, society, culture, experiences have done to me!

I would answer with the words of that grand and wise woman Eleanor Roosevelt: “No one can make me feel inferior without my consent.” We are active players in each moment, choosing second by second what path to take, what word to speak, what thought to keep, what feeling to allow. No one can do that for you.

Even if you are running for your life to escape danger, even if you seem to be trapped in the wrong place, even if someone has caused you harm in any way, you are still free of it all in your core being. No one can take from you the truth of who you are— which is so much greater than your personality.

Even then, you are still weaving your life story, choosing its outcome by your reaction to it. Your reactions are the threads.

Reaction is the key. When you react in defense, you succumb to what is external. But you always have the option…
