Trump Is Bringing Back the Doomsday Trigger

Since January 25, 2018, the minute hand on The Doomsday Clock, a measure of global stability, stands at two minutes to midnight. By this indicator, we are closer to Armageddon than we have been since 1953 after the explosion of the hydrogen bomb. This clock, managed by The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, is intended as grave warning of the imminent global threat of nuclear war.
Trump’s suspension of the Nuclear Disarmament Treaty is the trigger that could advance us to midnight.
Trump and the Republicans from January 2017 to November 2018 had control of everything in these United States — all of Congress, the White House, most state governor positions, and more. They have been unable to accomplish anything. Is that why they want to up the ante and give some hawkish news to rev up the country by supplying us with a Cold War threat — again? To get some publicity and show they are made of “strong stuff”?
I am beginning to wonder if we can EVER recover as a country from the debacle of Trump and this current Republican administration. I am grateful beyond words for the new Democrats who have entered the House of Representatives. My hope is that they can successfully counter this madness of escalating nuclear armaments — which is what happens as soon as this treaty is broken!
The truth is that the absolute incompetence of Trump and the passivity of the Republican Senate have brought us to the brink of a very real danger that we should never have had to encounter again on this planet, not ever.
There are some who will benefit from the escalation of a Cold War — the corporations who make the armaments. They always benefit from war and things war-like. Maybe the Republicans believe this is a good way to increase manufacturing jobs? They are mistaken. Corporations are not going to pay high salaries to factory jobbers when they can pay a pittance in third world countries or elsewhere off-shore.
Still, given how clueless the Republicans have been about what the people — the citizens of this country — want and need, it is possible — it is even likely — they really are clueless about what the effects of suspending the Nuclear Disarmament Treaty will be.
They don’t see the potential deaths and threat of death involved for hundreds of millions. Or even the immediate instability their actions promote worldwide now. They do see the money.
If Congress cannot stop this insane action by Trump — if they accept it, disregarding everything that is sane and life-giving — it is evidence indeed that we have lost all credibility as a country, forever. What that will mean as time goes on? Well, we’ll find out, won’t we…if we’re still here…
